John Russo

With twenty books published internationally and nineteen feature movies in worldwide distribution, John Russo has been called a “living legend.” He began by co-authoring (with George Romero) the screenplay for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, which has been recognized as a horror classic. He has had a long, rewarding career, also penning films such as RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, MIDNIGHT, THE MAJORETTES, THE AWAKENING, and HEARTSTOPPER.

His books on the art and craft of movie making, such as HOW TO MAKE EXCITING MONEY MAKING MOVIES, have become bibles of independent production. Quentin Tarantino and many other noted filmmakers have stated that Russo’s books helped them launch their careers.

Recently, his screenplay for ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD was made into a five-part comic book released by Avatar Press to great acclaim. Russo’s latest novel DEALEY PLAZA was published by Burning Bulb Publishing, which has also published Russo’s novels THE ACADEMY, THE AWAKENING, THE BOOBY HATCH, LIMB TO LIMB, LIVING THINGS, and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. His short story “Channel 666” appears in THE BIG BOOK OF BIZARRO, and John was a contributing editor on the Burning Bulb hit anthology RISE OF THE DEAD.

He is also slated to direct two movies: a remake of his cult hit, MIDNIGHT, and a brand new take on the “zombie phenomenon” entitled SPAWN OF THE DEAD.

Silver Scream to Debut NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Criterion Restoration

In its third year running, the Famous Monsters-backed festival will be the first to screen the Romero horror classic’s Criterion restoration in a theater.

They’re coming to get you, Santa Rosa.

Fifty years on, the dead still won’t stay down, and they’re crawling to the Roxy 14 for the third annual iteration of the Silver Scream Film and Comic Festival. 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of George A. Romero’s landmark NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, and the Silver Scream Fest will be showing the brand new Criterion Collection edition for the very first time in a movie theater, accompanied by appearances by its producer, Russell Streiner, and many more members of the cast and crew.

Other announced guests for 2018 include the Heroines of Horror triumvirate of Dee Wallace (CUJO, THE HOWLING), Barbara Crampton {RE-ANIMATOR, CHOPPING MALL), and Kelli Maroney (CHOPPING MALL, NIGHT OF THE COMET).

The call to return to Santa Rosa has been strong, especially after the disaster of the October 2017 wildfires that swept Sonoma County and left many without homes or jobs. Silver Scream feels it is important to honor the community of Santa Rosa and donate portions of its proceeds to wildfire charities.

“Santa Rosa Entertainment Group and the CULT Film Series are extremely proud to bring The Silver Scream Film and Comic Festival back home,” said co-producer Neil Pearlmutter. “We have a great mix of independent films, genre favorites, and renowned classics in the lineup, but it is equally important that we acknowledge the devastation experienced by our community this past October. We are healing and look forward to showcasing the resilience of our people and beauty of our region.”

Film selection is currently underway on Withoutabox.com, and the festival is accepting feature films, short films, animation, screenplays, graphic novels, and graphic novel scripts.
